What to Expect from Your Child's First Piano Lesson
By Choupak Piano Studio
Starting piano lessons is an exciting milestone for both children and parents. If your child is about to have their very first lesson, you might be wondering what actually happens during that initial session.
The Teacher Will Assess Your Child’s Starting Point
The first lesson is partly diagnostic. The teacher will observe your child’s natural comfort at the keyboard — how they sit, how they use their hands, and whether they have any prior musical exposure. This isn’t a test; it’s simply a way for the teacher to understand where to begin.
Basic Posture and Hand Position
One of the first things a piano teacher addresses is how to sit at the piano and how to hold the hands. Proper posture and hand position are foundational skills that affect everything that follows. Your child will learn to sit at the right height, maintain a relaxed but supported hand shape, and use their arms and fingers efficiently.
Introduction to the Keyboard
Even students with no prior experience will begin learning the geography of the keyboard — where the groups of black and white keys are, how to find middle C, and how the piano is organized by pitch. This is typically done through simple, engaging exercises rather than rote memorization.
A First Piece (or the Start of One)
Many teachers will introduce a short, simple piece or exercise during the very first lesson. This gives the student an immediate sense of accomplishment and something to practice at home. Don’t worry if it’s just a few notes — the goal is to build confidence and establish the habit of practicing.
Practice Expectations
The teacher will likely discuss practice expectations with both the student and the parent. For young beginners, 15 to 20 minutes of focused daily practice is usually a good starting point. Consistency matters more than duration at this stage.
What Parents Can Do
The most helpful thing parents can do is create a consistent practice environment at home — a quiet space, a regular time, and an instrument that’s in tune and in good condition. You don’t need to be musical yourself; simply being present and encouraging makes a difference.
